Hopefully,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your pets have never ingested anything that caused a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feltonveterinaryhospital.com\/services\/emergency-care.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pet emergency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it\u2019s always great to be prepared!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we spring into spring, we\u2019re all itching to get outside. It\u2019s amazing (and somewhat scary!) how many potential poisons are in and around the average garden, yard, and home. With that in mind, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feltonveterinaryhospital.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Felton Veterinary Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has put together here a few tips and ideas for how to prevent pet poisoning at home. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet Toxicity 101<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, a few basics on pet poisoning. Poisons act fast, so if you feel your pet has ingested something potentially toxic, you should act fast, too. Give us a call or come in right away &#8211; don\u2019t spend time on the internet trying to figure things out or leave a voicemail for your veterinarian. If it\u2019s after hours, seek emergency care immediately. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet poisoning signs can be subtle at first, and may not even show up until several days after your pet ingests something toxic. Signs that your pet may experience include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drooling<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pawing at the mouth<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pale or grayish gum color<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Racing heartbeat<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness\/ collapse<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle tremors<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive thirst or urination<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevent Pet Poisoning in Your Home<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awareness is key when considering items in your home that you\u2019ll want to keep out of your pet\u2019s reach. This is a basic list, and is not exhaustive &#8211; so if you have any questions, let us know.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>People food \u2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;people foods such as chocolate, bread dough, fatty table scraps, onions\/garlic\/chives, raisins and grapes, macadamia nuts, and xylitol (sometimes found in peanut butter) can all be toxic to pets.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Medications \u2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> keep all human medications far from pets! Some can be especially toxic to them. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen (Advil) are two medications found in many medicine cabinets that can cause big problems for pets. Keep human and pet medications separate, read the labels each time you give medication to your pet to make sure it\u2019s the right one, and be on the safe side &#8211; don\u2019t share unprescribed medication between pets. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Flowers and plants \u2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there are certain flowers and plants commonly used around the home that can be toxic and even deadly to pets, such as lilies and cyclamen. The safest flowers and plants to use in homes with pets are of the silk or cloth variety &#8211; and even those should be out of curious cat\u2019s reach! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Cleaning supplies and chemicals \u2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;you may have guessed that some cleaning supplies and chemicals can be irritating to pets noses and mouths, and can also be toxic if ingested. Ventilate your home well when cleaning, keep pets away from \u201chelping\u201d you when you clean, and keep all cleaning supplies and chemicals out of their reach.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Essential oils and liquid potpourri \u2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> essential oils and liquid potpourri can be damaging to pets\u2019 organs and toxic if ingested. In addition, even the aromatherapy smells you like can be very irritating and potentially harmful to pets. Talk to us before using any essential oils around (or on) your pets, and give them a way to \u201cescape\u201d diffused smells.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet Poison Prevention in Your Yard and Garden<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With rain (finally!) and spring approaching, it\u2019s important to realize how many things in your yard and garden might pose a poisoning risk to your pets. Common sense and precaution are good watchwords, and again, if you think your pet has eaten something poisonous, don\u2019t wait to seek treatment. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a basic list of things to watch for.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bone and blood meal<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fertilizers<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mushrooms &#8211; which often bloom after the rain!<\/span><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">t<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><\/a><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cocoa mulch<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rat and mouse poison<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snail bait<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re always available to help if you need assistance with questions about pet poisoning.
